Fangtooth's Purpose

Our purpose is to help customers build better machines. Our motto is: “INSPIRE.GREAT.AUTOMATION”. Fangtooth combines application knowledge, manufacturing flexibility, and responsive support so engineering teams can reduce risk, simplify sourcing, and move confidently toward production.
We are built for applications that do not fit neatly into a catalog. Whether you are dealing with heavy loads, high speeds, tight spaces, long strokes, harsh duty cycles, or unique mounting requirements, Fangtooth works beside your team to develop a solution that fits the machine—not the other way around.
From simple shaft modifications to multi-product mechanical assemblies, we help customers turn complex requirements into clear, manufacturable solutions. Our CALCasd (Calculated Application Sizing Data) documentation supports faster decision-making by showing key sizing, torque, duty-cycle, and performance factors before you commit.
The result is a supplier relationship that helps reduce engineering time, control costs, improve machine performance, and keep projects moving from concept through build.
Fangtooth serves OEM machine builders, factory automation customers, and industrial teams that need dependable products, practical engineering input, and responsive support from people who understand real production environments.
Our goal is to be the motion-control partner customers call when performance matters, schedules are tight, and a standard solution is not enough.

Fangtooth's History

Fangtooth’s foundation is decades of hands-on experience in engineering, manufacturing, automation, and heavy industry. Since 1985, members of our leadership team have supported machine builders and end users including Comau, Fives-Cinetic, Kuka, Valiant, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Telso, Amazon, Cummins, Stellantis, Ford, GM, Space-X, Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance and many more.
That background gives Fangtooth a practical edge: we understand what engineers, purchasing teams, and production leaders need from a supplier—reliable products, clear communication, technical confidence, and solutions that hold up in demanding environments.
Located at the heart of the U.S. Automotive high production world, our experience spans industrial washing systems, gear drives, automation equipment, heavy-duty mechanical systems, and global industry applications in steel, stamping, aggregate, food processing, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Across thousands of applications and over 50,000 axes, Fangtooth’s leadership has contributed to custom systems for high-production welding, engine assembly, machining, material handling, robot-cell protection, lift-and-locate equipment, and precision positioning applications.
Fangtooth Inc. was formed in 2021 by Shawn Stearn after his time with Bosch Rexroth linear systems. Dave Lively and Sean Koneff become part of the founding team with vast experience in the design and build arena. The company was created to give customers a more responsive, application-focused source for custom-engineered motion solutions, value-added subassemblies, and practical product integration support.
Fangtooth’s first innovation began with the “FANGTOOTH” - a carbide-tip assembly tooth integrated into the FANGopen and FANGmax linear mount assembly for guided rack systems, 2560BSA guided ball screws, and guided screw jacks. The company later introduced a square hollow-bore coil-handling right-angle gearbox, selling hundreds of units into the utility industry.
Fangtooth continued expanding its engineering capabilities with the perfect-mount ball screw float-end support drive system, allowing gearing reduction into high-lead ball screws for higher linear speeds at longer lengths and a clean servo motor mount into the ball screw assembly. Fangtooth also developed an integral ball screw float gearbox method that can eliminate couplings and mechanically synchronize multiple ball screws in a system.
In 2024, Fangtooth partnered with Powerjacks USA to supply Fangtooth Combikits or Powerjacks USA Sidecars (added gearing/motor inputs) and also product additions to create multi-jack systems. Jacking systems are regularly supplied as 2, 4, 6 & 8 jack systems. Larger systems can extend up to 16 or higher. With the use of electronic synchronization & control multiple systems or screw jacks can be used in unison. Extending the possible number of screw jacks used in unison in excess of 100. Popular jack systems include the “H-Configuration”, “U-Configuration”, “T-Configuration”, “I-Configuration” and now the “UF-Configuration” innovated by Fangtooth. The “UF-Configuration” eliminates at least one gearbox in the power train saving assembly time and cost.
Today, Fangtooth is a full manufacturing company with many products designed and manufactured at its U.S. facility in Livonia, Michigan—giving customers access to local engineering support, flexible production, and solutions built around application needs.
Customers choose Fangtooth because we combine product breadth, engineering collaboration, responsive delivery, and custom manufacturing flexibility to help machines perform better and projects move forward with confidence.
